St.Mary’s church has its origin from MEP fathers. They came to this place in the beginning of 20th century. This parish was erected in 1961. Fr.Iruthayam, a diocesan, was the first Parish Priest. The local people are coolies and occupy a low position in the social stratification. They are economically poor. Their main work is masonry. Nowadays some people go to the textile companies. Not much of care was given for the education and development of this village. About 120 years back, these people got migrated from Trichy and got settled here.

In order to develop the mission of Mariapuram,it was given to the Congregation of MSFS on contract for 15 years. Fr.M. John de Britto was appointed as the parish priest on 24 June 2009. There was a small church in the parish and later a new church was constructed. It was consecrated by Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Aquinas, the bishop of Coimbator and was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. A. Dharmaraj, the Provincial. There are about 250 families in the parish and there are about 60 families in the substations. There are four substations, namely Perumanallur, Kunnathur, Konapuram and Sengapally-Adhiyur.
