My dear Confreres,
Greetings to you all! We are in the Year of Saint Francis De Sales, our Patron. A lot of spiritual and other activities have been planned and are being organized in our Congregation and in our province. Most important of all is the interiorizing the virtues of St.Francis De Sales and imitating them. One of his outstanding contributions to Catholic Church is his advocacy of holiness for all. This time, I would like to focus on this virtue of Holiness for all.
During the time of St. Francis De Sales, holiness/perfection was understood and practiced in a restricted way. It had an exclusivist approach, as being meant for only a select few. The common view of the day was that to live a holy, perfect and sanctifying life, one needs to be an extraordinary being, far surpassing ordinary people and far distant from ordinary life and imagine a category of beings closer to angels than to humans. This kind of view made the large of number of people specially laity to think that he or she is not gifted to live a life of holiness and perfection. As such, it was considered that entry into religious life or clerical state was really the only path to holiness/perfection and was reserved to a few – priests, monks, cloistered nuns and a few spiritual athletes, who are capable of rigorous fasts, long vigils and harsh austerities. It was considered that lay people are generally incapable of living a holy, perfect and sanctifying life. The scheme of holiness was thought to be out of reach of vast majority of the faithful.
But Saint Francis De Sales was a man ahead of his time. He refused to accept the common understanding that holiness is reserved to a select few. For him, everyone, who is baptized in the name of Jesus and is a Christian, is called to holiness/perfection. For him, it is not restricted to those select few endowed with extraordinary physical, intellectual and moral capacities. He insisted that everyone is called to holy and perfect life suitable to their state of life, and this was the theme of his spiritual masterpiece, “Introduction to the Devout Life”. In this spiritual classic, St. Francis de Sales solemnly declares that “It is an error, even a heresy, to want to see the devout life banished from the company of soldiers, the worker’s shop, the court of princes, the home of married couples…because wherever we are, we can and we ought to aspire to the life of perfection.” For him everyone, whatever is the state of life is called to a life of holiness/perfection according to their own state of life. Wherever one is and whatever his/her state of life, be it soldier, worker, married or unmarried, everyone is capable and is called to live a holy life befitting their status. It does not matter what profession one does and what walk of life one has chosen or what state of life one is. What is imperative is that everyone, as a Christina, has a call and is capable of living a holy and perfect life. St. Francis De Sales, as against the trend of his time, daringly invites everyone for a life of holiness/perfection. For him, holiness/perfection is not a concern of a select few, but it is everybody’s concern and everybody’s destiny and vocation.
St. Francis De Sales’ advocacy and recognition of holiness for all made him a man ahead of his time and became a forerunner to Second Vatican Council’s Universal Call to Holiness, especially in its dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium. On the occasion of fourth centenary of St. Francis De Sales’ birth, Pope Paul VI recalled the saint’s enduring relevance and significance stating “No one of the recent Doctors of the Church more than St. Francis de Sales anticipated the deliberations and decisions of the Second Vatican Council with such a keen and progressive insight. He renders his contribution by the example of his life, by the wealth of his true and sound doctrine, by the fact that he has opened and strengthened the spiritual ways of Christian perfection for all states and conditions in life. We propose that these three things be imitated, embraced, and followed.”
St. Francis De Sales’ greatest achievement is his successful integration of the seemingly disparate worldly and spiritual realities into one coherent vision of life in his call for holiness for all. The virtue of holiness for all is most important contribution of our patron to the spirituality of the Catholic Church. His holiness for all is as relevant and significant, as it was in his time. His teachings and methods in this regard are very practical even to this day. That is why he continues to inspire a number of religious congregations, dioceses, lay associations and movements etc.
Dear Confreres, we are very fortunate to have St. Francis De Sales as our Patron. In this Year of St. Francis De Sales, let us celebrate it very meaningfully. The external and outward celebrations are fine. But what is more imperative is that each one of us interiorize his Gospel based virtues, more especially his call for holiness. As religious following his spirituality, we are expected to do the three things. One is that of personal holiness that is we need to grow everyday in the virtues and values of our Lord Jesus Christ in and through the spirituality of our patron St. Francis De Sales. Second is that we need to grow in our collective holiness in our communities and as one religious family. As MSFS, there cannot be one without the other. Both personal holiness and collective holiness has to go hand in hand. Thirdly, it is the mandate given to us that we need to animate and assist and lead all, those who are entrusted to our care, in the path of holiness/perfection, according to the state of their life by our exemplary life and ministry.

iii. St. Augustine of Hippo Parish, Kameme – Blessings of St. Andrew’s Church in Ipenza substation and blessing the Parish Office at Kameme
The 21st May, 2022 was long awaited day for the faithful of St. Augustine of Hippo parish, Kameme and St. Andrew’s Church, Ipenza. Because the day was marked by two events, the blessing and opening of St. Augustine’s parish office and the blessing and opening of St. Andrew’s Church, which were the fruits of the tireless efforts and the continuous prayers of the people. Almost for 6 years, the people were praying and celebrating the sacraments under the trees and for the last 2 years in a clinic. Now thanks to God, he has blessed the people with a new beautiful church. The church and the parish office were opened by Fr. Ignacimuthu, the Provincial and blessed by His Lordship Martin Mtumbuka, the Bishop of Karonga Diocese. The holy mass was celebrated by his Lordship Martin Mtumbuka, and concelebrated by Fr. Ignacimuthu, the provincial, Fr. Sahaya Wilson, the Bursar and Fr. Nelson. We thank all the donors and benefactors, who generously assisted us to complete the parish office and St. Andrew’s Church, Ipenza. We thank God for his abundant blessings.
The year 2022 was indeed a year of blessings for the faithful of St. Augustine of Hippo Parish, Kameme and communities around Kameme TA. During this year, we have dug five boreholes at Titi, Chiwanga, Ipenza, Kameme and Soperera. The faithful of Kameme parish and the local communities had access to only rain water and during the dry seasons people used to walk almost several kilometers to fetch water. And now, thanks to this project, the people are able to get clean and good water. The people are very happy. The Parishioners and the communities are grateful to the initiatives taken by the people concerned and expressed their gratitude to the South-East India Province, the provincial, the parish priest and all the organizations, which helped them in this regard.
Yewo Chomene,
Fr. C. Berin Msfs
When our provincial visited St. Augustine of hippo parish, Kameme in the month of October 2021, he took really into his heart the sufferings and the struggles that the people were undergoing due to the scarcity of water. As a result, he promised to support us with two boreholes and now we have them and benefit from them. There are still a lot of places where there is a terrible need of water and in some areas the people and animals drink the same water due to which the people get sick very often and even die. I seek your continuous prayer for our mission in Malawi and for our people here.

“Lord, I am Yours,
and I must belong to no one but You.
My soul is Yours,
and must live only by You.
My will is Yours,
and must love only for You.
I must love You as my first cause,
since I am from You.
I must love You as my end and rest,
since I am for You.
I must love You more than my own being,
since my being subsists by You.
I must love You more than myself,
since I am all Yours and all in You.
Amen.”
